HINDHEAD Tunnel on the A3 has now reopened after a car caught fire inside it at about 7am this morning (April 28).

Both the south and north bound carriageways of the A3 are now open again, although one lane remains closed on the north bound side.

Roads in the area remain were still slow moving at about 10am, although this expected to improve.

The closure caused traffic problems on roads around the tunnel, and long tailbacks on the A3 itself, and five fire appliances from Haslemere, Guildford, Farnham and Cranleigh attended the incident, which saw smoke billowing out of the tunnel.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "Hindhead tunnel closed in both directions due to a stranded vehicle that had smoke coming from it.”
