As we are getting further into autumn, the weather is also changing with strong wind, heavy rain and cold temperatures.
Being outside during these conditions can have an effect on your skin, causing concerns you may not usually experience.
The wind gradually breaks down your skin barrier responsible for retaining moisture. You may not feel your skin become dry, but it’s drying out more quickly than you’d expect.
Harsh winds can even cause fine lines to develop as it weakens the skin.
The skin around the eye is a lot thinner than the rest of your skin, and this may be the first place you notice the effects of the weather. Applying SPF has the same importance as applying it on a hot, sunny day, as our protective layer of the skin is weakened and unable to protect us from UV rays the way it usually does.
Moisturising and using SPF, including the eyes too, will help protect your skin and significantly reduce the chances of fine lines appearing.
Your body will give you signs that you’re becoming dehydrated. Your lips will feel dry first, as they become chapped in the wind first. This can be prevented by drinking plenty of water and rubbing on lip balm regularly.
Here is a generalised recommended skincare routine to help protect your skin through these conditions.
Double cleanse
The skin needs extra care through this time of the year as our skin adjusts and changes with the weather. The first cleanse removes any oil, makeup and dirt from the skin.
The second cleanse will treat the skin – depending on which cleanser you are using – to target your specific skin concerns.
Tone
Toner refines our pores and can also treat the skin depending on your product. Specific ingredients within a toner can help hydrate, calm or balance the skin.
Exfoliate
Exfoliate once or twice a week, depending on how much time you have in your evenings, and also based on how your skin is feeling. Over-exfoliation is the worst thing you could do as you’ll disrupt the skin barrier and make the skin more sensitised, and the skin will not be protected as much.
Mask
Use a mask once or twice a week. Most people experience drier skin, so pick a nourishing face mask or a mask that will help with hydration for the skin and always tone after a mask!
For all the above treatments, and depending on your skin, choose serums and moisturisers appropriately. Both serums and moisturisers will help nourish the skin and protect it from external aggressions.
Moisturiser will act as a barrier to protect the skin, so ideally choose one that contains an SPF.
