THE HEAVENS may have opened on and off over the Easter weekend but hundreds of visitors enjoyed the array of events taking place in Petersfield’s town centre.
A colourful spectacle of plants and flowers greeted visitors to St Peter’s Church on Saturday as an Easter garden was being prepared.
St Peter’s church warden Vanda Leary said: “This is the first time we have done this as we normally have a small plant display in the church. The idea was to make something so people outside the church can see what’s going on and ask questions.
“It’s a lovely churchyard. Fresh flowers are being placed here and they will be here for another three weeks. Despite the weather, we’re been really pleased with the number of people who have visited.”
Tom Barnett, from Petersfield, said: “My daughter goes to the infant school next door and we’ve really enjoyed the whole event, the quiz, the art and crafts and flower planting.”
The Rocky Appeal Giant Easter Market at the Festival Hall saw more than 70 stalls set up, welcoming hundreds of visitors which helped to raise almost £2,500 for good causes.
The main beneficiary is Portsmouth Hospitals’ Rocky Appeal, at £805.
It is the 45th market organised by brothers Jeremy and Martin Holmes.
Jeremy said: “We do this as a family and we were here for the first event, when the aim was to raise money for a body scanner back in 1988.
“We do this because we can see the anguish and what illnesses like cancer put people through.
More Easter fun was had at Burnett’s Fun Fair on the Heath. Caroline Charlwood-Heath, of Petersfield, took her sons, Marcus, Lewis and Leon, to the fair. “We come every year. The kids really enjoy it here, it’s really good fun.”
