A CLEAN up has begun in communities across East Hampshire as the district wakes up to the mess caused by Storm Katie.

People around East Meon, Langrish, Stroud and Froxfield could face a day without electricity as a result of gales bringing down overhead power lines.

Supplies should be restored by 11pm according to the Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution website as engineers are dealing with a huge number of incidents around the south.

People in villages east of Rowlands Castle could also expect a similar delay while further power cuts have also been reported in Hill Brow, Rake and Rogate.

The power situation is more positive south of Butser but several roads remain blocked due to fallen trees at the time of writing.

Chainsaw-wielding volunteers managed to remove fallen trees from Petersfield Lane and Red House Lane in Clanfield this morning, with both now being passable.

Part of Treadwheel Road between Horndean and Finchdean was also partially blocked as a tree came down close to the old Idsworth Schoolhouse.

The winds, which measured 75mph on Thorney Island and a whopping 105mph at The Needles, Isle of Wight, caused limited damage around the district.

They brought down panels next to the Twyford Moors Classic Cars garage in Clanfield and railings outside the Gales Park development in Horndean.

Rail services through East Hampshire were also affected due to obstructions on the line in the Portsmouth and Haslemere areas.
