THE HERITAGE and landscape of the South Downs will be the subject when an 11th century church near Rowlands Castle holds its first art exhibition.
Supporters of St Hubert’s Idsworth have praised Finchdean artist Deborah Richards for organising the fundraising event.
Work by 30 professional and established artists will be displayed in the church between Finchdean and Chalton next Saturday and Sunday, September 16-17.
Entry and parking will be free while the Friends of St Hubert’s Church Trust will receive a percentage from the sale of any artwork.
“The exhibition has been inspired by this very special location, as all the works will reflect aspects of St Hubert’s, its heritage and the South Downs,” said Deborah, an exhibition curator and artist who lives within walking distance of the church.
“We have created an engaging show of themed paintings, prints, photos, textiles, ceramics, glass, metal and other 3D works within the church itself.
“The artists have also kindly dedicated their time and skill to assist with the fundraising for costly repairs required to restore this special church.”
Ruth and Jon Barrett-Danes, Pippa Blake, Heather Bowring, Jean Bradley, Victoria Brown, Polly Dutton, Annie Evans, Emily Faludy, Annie Flitcroft, Linda Foskett, Chris Gilbert, Jan Guest and Sandra Izzard are just some of the 30 artists who are taking part in the exhibition.
The trust was formed in 2015 in the hope of saving the tiny ‘church in the field’ for future generations.
The group is attempting to raise £300,000 for major repairs through grant applications, donations and a programme of events.
Previous events have included a folk and classical concert, poetry readings, sponsored walks and tea afternoons.
The art exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, September 16, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, September 17, while refreshments will be available on both dates.
