CALLING all ‘Janeites’ – a host of page-turning Austen-inspired events are sure to inspire at East Hampshire attractions.
Jane Austen’s House Museum and Chawton House Library have a packed summer programme to entice literary enthusiasts.
Although the events are celebratory of her life and work, on the date of Austen’s death, July 18, the mood will be reflective at the museum in Chawton.
There will be a reading of a letter by Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra in the wake of the writer’s death, followed by a moment for reflection at noon. The lights in the house will be left off and the village flag will fly at half mast.
Handicraft, as practiced in Austen’s era, weaves a thread through the events at the museum.
It has received Heritage Lottery funding to produce a community quilt inspired by the Jane Austen coverlet held in the museum collection.
Drop into a free patchwork quilting workshop and contribute to the finished article at the Winchester Discovery Centre on Saturday, from 10am to 1pm. This is free and suitable for all.
There is a free craft afternoon – ‘Stories in Stitches’ – on August 5, from 11am to 4pm, also at the museum.
The recent discovery of wood-block printed wallpaper at the museum has inspired a workshop on linocut printmaking and letterpress with artist Jazmin Velasco, on July 23, from 10am to 4pm. Tickets are £60 to include materials.
A letter from Austen never exhibited before is one of the items in Fickle Fortunes: Jane Austen and Germaine de Stael.
The exhibition at Chawton House Library until September 24, shows how the reputations of these two writers have re-aligned over two centuries. There will be first editions and unique manuscripts displayed too.
