FERNHURST Choral Society will break new ground this month when it performs a concert of jazz and swing, accompanied by the Matt Robinson Jazz Trio.
The principal piece is A Little Jazz Mass, by contemporary choral composer and former King’s Singer Bob Chilcott. The five short movements are a jazz interpretation of the Latin Mass, which has been described as “gorgeous, soulful music in an utterly original setting” by Oxford University Press.
The concert will continue with classic American songs from the first half of the 20th century. These include Cole Porter’s Every time we say Goodbye and Let’s Do It; George and Ira Gershwin’s I got Rhythm and A Foggy Day in London Town; and Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields’ The Way you Look Tonight.
Musical director and conductor Tim Ravalde said: “We’re really looking forward to this concert.
“It’s a departure from our usual repertoire and we’re enjoying getting to know something a bit different.
“We’re sure the audience will enjoy it too.”
The concert is on Saturday at St Mary’s Church, Petworth, at 7.30pm.
Tickets at £15 for adults are available from Fernhurst Post Office, by calling 01428 654893, on the door or from the choir’s website at: www.fernhurstchoralsociety.org.uk
The concert is in aid of The Hunter Centre, which supports people living with dementia.
