The secrets of a picturesque East Hampshire church passed by thousands of rail passengers every day will be revealed this weekend.

The first in a series of history talks and guided tours of St Hubert’s Idsworth will begin at 2.30pm this Saturday, May 17.

The “little church in the field” north of Rowlands Castle is one of the oldest in Hampshire with around a millennium of history.

John Bannell, churchwarden and buildings officer, will talk about its rich history, important medieval wall paintings and the church’s maintenance during the hour-long tour.

He said: “St Hubert’s is a real historical gem and there is something here to refer to from every century of the last 1,000 years.

“With the weather forecast looking good, some people might like to combine this event with a walk in the countryside.”

Participation is free and no booking is required, but donations will be welcome, with further talks planned for June 19 and July 12.
