A LIPHOOK racing driver, who was the first wheelchair user to compete in the Volkswagen Cup Championships, is hoping to inspire other people.
Simon Andrews is a T8 paraplegic, and has limited use of his right arm.
However, that hasn’t stopped Simon earning his racing licence and becoming the first wheelchair user to compete in the championships.
“I started with track days and I loved the buzz and competition of racing,” said Simon.
“I wanted to take it to the next level, but I had to prove I was safe and competent on the track, and could exit the car in under ten seconds, before I got my racing licence.”
“I got my racing licence before the 2011 season, and I have been racing in the Volkswagen Cup Championships since then.”
Simon is hoping his story will inspire other people that their dreams can come true.
He said: “I was the first wheelchair user in the championships, but another guy in a wheelchair has since joined and that was quite satisfying.
“When I started racing, I knew I was doing it but I didn’t know what it could bring to other people, so that has given me a lot of satisfaction.
“You don’t know what’s round the corner so if you want to start racing you should. You don’t want to have any regrets.”
Simon is now looking forward to the 2016 season.
“The season is kicking off at the end of April and I can’t wait for it,” said Simon.
“I will do the testing shortly and make sure everything is all working.
“I think I can move further up the grid this year though as I’ve been working on a few things.”
While Simon lives near Liphook, the majority of his family live in Petersfield, and he is sponsored by the White Rose Garage in Petersfield.
