LISS Archaeological Group (LAG) has completed this year’s big dig at Stroud.

The dig took place on the last three weekends of July, with digging taking place on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Working under licence from Historic England, LAG explored the field, which contains the Romano-British villa excavated between 1906 and 1908, using geophysics equipment to scan under the ground and determine whether that excavation found the full extent of the buildings.

LAG also explored a theory that there was a trackway running from the villa’s gateway, south-west in the Butser Hill direction. The group also dug some test pits, and found lots of Roman brick and tiles.

LAG chairman David Quick said: “From the point of view of finding evidence of other buildings we were very successful, but we were less successful finding traces of roads, probably because they’ve been ploughed out.”
