WITH?spring flowers in full bloom, the promise of summer around the corner and bank holiday days in May to look forward to, this month is the ideal time to explore our National Trust properties.

There are a raft of activities at the stunning venues around the county, with special events in the coming weeks at Hinton Ampner, Uppark, Winchester City Mill and more.

Children are encouraged to tackle the Trust’s ‘50 Things to Do Before You’re 11 3/4’ challenges too, which include tree climbing and den building.

A spring woodland walk is taking place this Saturday at Hinton Ampner, from 1-3pm.

This is a guided walk around the ancient estate there and through the beautiful flower-festooned woodland. The walk finishes at the tearoom and includes afternoon tea.

Tickets are £10. Book on 0844 249 1895.

Themed baking demonstrations are on offer at Winchester City Mill this Sunday, from 11am to 3pm.

The bustling working watermill will be filled with the delicious smell of baking on the bank holiday. The mill’s own stoneground flour will be used to make seasonal treats. Take home free recipe cards too.

Experience the full force of the River Itchen as it roars underneath the historic building – known as the ‘Thrill of the Mill’ – and view the latest CCTV footage of the resident otters.

Last summer’s straw bale maze was so popular, it is making a return to Hinton Ampner, from May 27. The children will love trying to get to the centre where there is a surprise.

Runs until September, 10am to 5pm. Usual admission applies.

Also at Hinton is a den building day on May 28. Head into the woodland for a fun-filled day with expert den builders, from 11am to 3pm. Usual admission applies.

Follow a May-time trail around the wildflower meadow of the beautiful 18th century mansion at Uppark at South Harting from May 28 to June 5, 11am to 4pm. Take a kite and watch it soar over the South Downs. Donation £1.
