THE ICONIC and colourful cut-outs of artist Henri Matisse are being displayed at Bedales.

This is an exciting chance to see reproductions of his famous images such as The Snail and Blue Nudes.

Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, presented by Hayward Touring, gives a brilliant overview of his late works, from 1950-54.

It is on at Bedales Gallery, from January 9 to February 6, Monday to Friday, 2pm to 5pm and Saturday, 10am to 1pm.

Matisse continued creating highly original works into his eighties when, confined to bed, he started to produce these striking cut-outs.

He used paper hand-painted with gouache, laid down in abstract or simple figurative patterns.

“The paper cut-out allows me to draw in the colour,” he said.

“Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it, I draw straight into the colour.”

The lithographic reproductions in the exhibition are taken from an issue of Verve, a review of art and literature published in 1958.

Bedales has had a hugely productive relationship with Haywards Touring since the 1990s.
