PEOPLE around the Meon Valley will go to the polls this week as a vacancy has opened up on Winchester City Council.

Four candidates will be vying for the seat when a by-election for the Upper Meon Valley ward is held this Thursday.

The development follows the August resignation of Tory Councillor Amber Tresahar, formerly Cllr Thacker, who had been expected to contest her seat at the 2019 local elections.

Hugh Lumby, of High Street, Meonstoke, has been put forward as the Conservative candidate by Marc Cumberlege.

Lewis North, of Cheriton, is the Liberal Democrat hopeful with Frances Keppel being his proposer.

June Kershaw, of Droxford, and Andrew Wainwright, of Twyford, are the Labour and Green candidates, respectively, having been nominated by Charlotte Winfield and Robert Brown.

No party has overall control of the council chamber in Winchester as just one seat separates the two frontrunners following the local elections in May.

The Conservatives held 23 seats to the Liberal Democrats’ 22 prior to Cllr Tresahar’s resignation.

Turnout in the Upper Meon Valley ward was also below the 44.19 per cent average for the district on voting day.
