Runner-up in the wildlife category of the South Downs National Park’s annual photo competition was Dick Hawkes with his delightful picture of a Surprised Water Vole appearing from a burrow on the River Meon in the middle of East Meon.

Photographer Dick Hawkes said: “I’m not sure who was the most surprised when I peered into the narrow channel and saw the vole.”

The competition theme was Experiencing the Natural World and the winning images will now join five highly-commended photos for the People’s Choice vote, which has a £100 prize. Vote at www.southdowns.gov.uk/PeoplesChoice2020 before January 31.
