A BEACON lighting event will be held in Milland to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Villagers are welcome to attend the event, which will be held on the village green on Thursday, April 21.

The event will start at about 8pm and will include patriotic music, bugle fanfares, a free glass of fizz and fireworks. The village beacon will be lit at about 8.20pm.

Villagers are then invited to adjourn to The Rising Sun in Milland for a mini Last Night of the Proms.

The co-ordinator of the event, Mike Friend, said: “We will start with a fanfare, and I will then say a few words.

“I will read out the letter I wrote to the Queen, and the response from the palace.

“I’ll also read a letter from Prince Charles, and there will then be another fanfare.

“We will then light the beacon, and there will be a free glass of fizz.

“We will then go to The Rising Sun for what I have called a mini Last Night of the Proms. We will sing Jerusalem, Rule, Britannia! and the national anthem.”

The beacon lighting event isn’t the only celebration in Milland for the Queen, as a big village street party will be held on Milland Recreation Field on Sunday, June 12.

The street party starts at 1pm with the Jazz Band.

Everyone who attends is asked to bring their own picnic lunch and drinks.

Dylans Ice Cream will be serving ice creams and Milland Stores will be open.

There will be a best dressed Queen competition, and the children’s entertainment will start at 2pm with a bouncy castle, a tug of war, potato and spoon races, wheelbarrow races and the chance to make a crown.

Tickets for the street party cost £20 per table, and are available from the Rising Sun and Milland Stores.
