WEEKEND matches saw Petersfield Hockey Club second team draw 3-3 with Fareham, while the club’s under-14s recorded a thumping 9-3 win over Portsmouth.
But the ladies’ second team lost 4-0 to a strong Havant V side, and the men’s thirds went down 6-5 to Chichester Friers.
’Field ladies started their warm-up without a goalkeeper until Amesbury padded up to guard the net.
But despite determined defending from Day and Jones, Havant scored within eight minutes.
In reply, strong play from Geer, Pearman and Silvester in the midfield created opportunities.
And Donovon was hitting strongly from the back, enabling the forwards to enter the opposition’s goal area.
But despite the efforts of Simmonds, Trewin and Vanoppen, no goals resulted.
And utilising their substitutes well, a goal-hungry Havant scored again from a short corner.
Havant continued to push forward, but Silvester and Preston worked hard in the midfield to deny them.
The second half saw both teams spread the play, but despite the efforts of both the defence and Amesbury, Havant scored twice more.
Even though Petersfield’s third team (pictured above) scored four times in the first 20 minutes, a Chichester Friers side, reinforced by veterans, managed to nick a 5-4 win.
The Petersfield goals came from constant midfield pressure orchestrated by Ben White that saw Roscoe Davey net three times, while excellent performances from Elliot and Max White were rewarded with a goal apiece.
In the last 15 minutes, with the score 4-4, Chichester’s stronger legs saw Petersfield concede two goals, only to pull one back - but a lack of time and injuries to Jonty Roberts, Max White and skipper Roberto Casabianca meant Chichester ran out the winners.
Meanwhile, Petersfield’s under-14 B team saw off visitors Portsmouth, hitting the goal trail to win 9-3.
From the off Petersfield dominated with some great play through the centre as T Young quickly scored the first goal.
He quickly slotted two more to complete an impressive tenminute hat-trick.
But Portsmouth rallied, forcing a first save from keeper Cook.
In reply, Hulme whipped the ball to Scott Plumber who fired in goal number four.
He quickly added number five and then scored again to complete his hat-trick.
Excellent defensive play by Hulme, E Young and Cropley stifled the visitors, and a cleared corner led to an interchange between Plumber, Cullen and E Young, with Young hitting goal number seven.
Hulme and T Young then left the pitch to play for Petersfield’s under-16 boys.
Bamber notched the eighth goal before Portsmouth rallied and after getting off the mark with an excellent opener, their pressure was rewarded with a second.
Their next attempt was saved by Cook, the following two shots from a now-dominant Portsmouth went wide - but a third goal which followed soon after was well deserved.
Petersfield’s final goal came from a great run by Walton who passed to Porter to score the ninth.
Petersfield men’s second team started the season away to Fareham VI.
Early ’Field pressure saw a trademark tomahawk strike from Ian Pruden into the Fareham goal.
But towards the end of the first half Fareham started to press the ’Field defence, forcing keeper Charlie Weller into some excellent saves.
Petersfield started the second half with a series of penalty corners after great play from Rory Plewes and Duncan McDermott.
Richard Thompson put one of them away with a rifle shot into the bottom left corner.
A goal-line scramble resulted in another goal for Pruden, stretching the Petersfield lead to 3-1.
But fitness took its toll and the game ended in a 3-3 draw with Fareham scoring twice in the last ten minutes.
Next week the second team take on Gillingham Seconds at home.
Men’s training is at 7.30pm on Tuesdays at Bedales school.
