EAST HAMPSHIRE MP Damian Hinds is fully backing the Stay Safe, Shop Local campaign being run by the Petersfield Post and East Hampshire District Council.

But he says our high streets, town centres and village shops were already under threat before the coronavirus pandemic.

On a visit to Petersfield he said “convenient” online shopping had been eroding high streets for some time before the March lockdown – but that the shutdown and the unsure return to town centres being experienced now by retailers had accelerated the process.

In conversation with shop owners, he acknowledged the problems facing retailers, many still struggling in the coronavirus fallout, despite getting financial support in the form of pandemic grants and loans from the government.

He also heard business rates, online shopping and out (or edge) of town retail outlets were just three of the problems.

Regarding the rates issue, he said the government is looking at reviewing the system with a view to helping businesses.

As for online shopping, he said despite the convenience of deliveries by Amazon, among others, there was no better experience than actually shopping for items.

And he said despite the pandemic, local high streets were attractive, vibrant places with a wide range of shops, from national chains to local independents, charity shops and hospitality outlets, all combining to offer visitors a welcome experience – one they would return for if they were promoted.

He added: “Merchandising our town centres in East Hampshire is vital as they have a great combination of assets and need to be promoted so potential visitors are aware how special they are.

“No-one wants to see a high street that is dead, or underused and empty.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our local economy, and a big part of employment for local people.

“And it is important for us all to support them and help ensure our town centres remain at the heart of local life.

“We have to protect and defend our high streets and enhance them.”
