COME the New Year, London-bound commuters leaving from Petersfield railway station will be able to enjoy an early morning, freshly-made sandwich to go.

Plans for a coffee, snacks and papers kiosk on the north bound platform have been agreed and it is due to open around the start of 2106.

At present, Anthony Higgins sells coffee to early morning passengers from a custom-made hot drinks dispensing tuk tuk van.

He said: “When the kiosk opens we are planning to sell coffee, hot croissants and sausage rolls, bacon sandwiches, and newspapers.

“I also hope to promote local attractions, and have a tourism stand with leaflets.

“The delay at the moment is the lack of electricity on that side of the station.

“An electric cable needs to be installed to provide the kiosk with power, and once it is in place work can start on the actual kiosk.

“But it will take a while to get it in place, and it will be quite expensive to install.

“But everything is agreed now and, hopefully, work should start before Christmas.”

Some commuters hungry to get their hands on hot, early-morning sustenance even suggested using crowd funding to pay for the work, added Mr Higgins.

In the meantime, proposals to bring a disused building on the southbound platform back into use are being discussed.

East Hampshire Community Rail Partnership spokesman Mark Miller said: “There have been offers to open a cafe and tourist information point in the old parcels office.”

Although the idea hasn’t been formalised, or a cafe contract awarded, it is understood that two caterers are looking at taking the project on.

The forecourt outside the station overlooking Lavant Street is being revamped, and it is suggested a cafe would further enhance the area.
