PENGUINS are set join camels and ‘desert rats’ at Buriton War Memorial in a display aimed at boosting the British Legion Poppy Appeal.
‘Desert rats’ was the name given to those who fought at the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt from October 23 to November 11, 1942, and the display marks the battle’s 80th anniversary.
Elaine Bray of Nursted Farm said: “A few penguins may also appear as this year is also the 40th anniversary of the Falklands campaign. Weather permitting, the display will remain until after the Remembrance period in November.
“Finances are tight and sadly this has a knock-on effect on people’s giving ability, so we wanted to raise the profile of the Poppy Appeal.”
The appeal fundraises for armed forces personnel, veterans, and their families, until Remembrance Sunday, November 13.
