An environmentalist wants Petersfield to go for gold after landing a key role at the town council.

Jacob Gibson will be tasked with developing and delivering a host of green projects around the town after being announced as the first Petersfield Ranger.

His specialist knowledge and experience will help PTC to manage its open spaces and further strengthen its links with the South Downs National Park Authority.

Mr Gibson has been asked to review the council’s existing management plans for its open spaces, give updates on environment and habitat conditions and get stuck into the Heath Amenity area project.

He will also play a key role in developing a management plan for John Goodyer Meadows and will explore a Bell Hill project that could lead further tree planting and more wild areas at the recreation ground and wildflower planting at the roundabout.

Mr Gibson is familiar with the patch as his CV includes a recent stint as a Heathland Engagement Ranger for the SNDPA which focused on sites near Whitehill & Bordon.

“That role was a brilliant introduction to the area and I learned a lot about valuable heathland habitats and great volunteering schemes,” said Mr Gibson, who started off as a Wildlife Officer in the Quantocks area of Somerset.

“Hopefully my diverse experience can bring a new perspective to the Town Council and this role.”

He added: “Petersfield has some amazing greenspaces that are highly valuable for wellbeing and nature.

“The Ranger role is needed to ensure we manage these spaces for the benefit of people and wildlife. I also want to champion Petersfield as gem of the National Park.

“We are one of the largest towns in any National Park in England and with so much natural and historic heritage we should be the gold standard for a community-focused nature haven.”
