ARCHAEOLOGISTS are set to excavate Bronze Age burial mounds on Petersfield Heath from early next month.

After a quiet summer, the People of the Heath project overseen by Petersfield Museum, is to resume under the guidance of project director archaeologist George Anelay.

Once again, volunteers are able to take part in the digs, or enjoy guided walks around them.

He said: “The project is now dividing into two lines of enquiry. We are looking for more data on the mound barrows, to see if the ones we have excavated are typical.

“The other line is the barrows that are almost flat, and hard to see.

“These seem to be a very different type of monument which we don’t really understand – so we will be tackling another of those.”

The split in the workload comes after the spring digs revealed exciting discoveries such as a burial urn and a boar tusk from around 2,000 BC, and other artefacts.

The excavations start at 9am on Tuesday, September 6, and end at 4.30pm on Saturday, September 24. Guided walks leave the Sussex Road car park at 4.30pm.
