NEWMAN Collard Tennis Club in Liss took part in a 24-hour tennis marathon.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jocelyn Rae and Danny Sapsford, the former Great Britain (GB) Davis Cup player who is now managing director of Bright Ideas for Tennis, played tennis continuously for 24 hours at the indoor National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

This was the fifth 24-hour tennis marathon, and Jocelyn and Danny successfully completed the endurance challenge to the acclaim of all on the balcony and courtside.

Jocelyn and Danny were ably supported in their efforts this year by two physios, two support staff, 15 fellow professionals and more than 100 players from 12 invited clubs from across the UK.

Newman Collard Tennis Club were one of the 12 clubs who were invited to send a team to support Jocelyn and Danny in their efforts.

Eight players from Liss, supported by chairman Roy Hubber, made their way up the A3 for a midnight start.

They returned four hours later having played against Jocelyn, Danny and fellow GB professionals Ollie Golding and Wimbledon men’s doubles champion Jonny Murray.

The 24-hour tennis marathon is an annual fundraising event, the aim of which is to help the 12 participating clubs raise money towards a project at their club.

Following the Liss Tennis Festival, which raised money to increase participation in Liss by providing free tennis opportunities for residents, Newman Collard Tennis Club is raising funds to refurbish and improve its clubhouse and facilities.
