WITH the vicar flipping crepes, and 90 volunteers out in force, it was a team effort that made West Meon Church Fete another big success.
The sun shone on Saturday’s event too in the grounds of West Meon House, bringing out hundreds of supporters from the village and further afield.
They were delighted with all the traditional attractions on offer, and helped to raise the fantastic amount of £6,200 for the ongoing upkeep of St John the Evangelist Church.
“I don’t know how we raise that much, but we do,” enthused organiser Audrey Higgs.
“It’s a very important fundraiser for the church, the biggest of the year.”
As well as the Rev Lionel Stock getting handy with the batter and the griddle, his curate Katy Garner was on the ‘Name the Bear’ stall.
This helped keep the scores of young fete-goers entertained along with fun games and activities including ‘Splat the Rat’, ‘Shoot the Duck’ and a treasure hunt.
They also loved the bouncy castle, toy stall and other side shows.
The many stalls always go down well at the annual event with plants, household, preserves and bottles all proving popular once again.
Handmade craft items, including bean bag chicken door stops, were quite a draw too. A jazz band kept visitors entertained while they were enjoying cream teas, ice creams, Pimms, and hot dogs rustled up by Neil Cunningham who donned an apron to take charge of the barbecue.
The raffle sold well, with prizes such as meals in local pubs and vouchers to spend in local shops.
“We had hundreds of people at the fete,” said Audrey. “They come from all over the place, and come back time and time again to support us.”
