THE BELLS of St Peter’s Church in Petersfield will be rung to remember members of the Forces who died for their country but at least three ringers who served in the First World War returned to take up their duties again.

Archibald John Garret, who is circled in the pre-war picture of ringers, went to war aged 31, leaving at home his widowed mother and two sisters at 1 Osbourne Road, Petersfield. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

Brothers Henry and Frank Mells lived with their parents at 14 Swan Street, Petersfield.

Henry, Frank and Archie were part of the band of eight ringers of the bells at St Peter’s in June 1919 to celebrate the signing of the Peace Treaty.
