FOR CENTURIES, regular markets in Petersfield Square have been a vital part of community and business life.

Although the livestock market ceased in the 1960s, produce and dry goods continued to be sold by traders from stalls – as they do today – on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

This picture, which turned up in the Post’s archives, is probably from the 1960s or 1970s, judging by customers’ clothing, but perhaps readers can help with definitely identifying the year.

The north side of the Square has The Square Brewery on the corner, as it is today, but to its right is Margaret Johns, now Heidi’s Patisserie, then the office of Southdown bus and coach services, currently occupied by Carphone Warehouse.
