THE DAYS when department stores such as Tyrrell and Green in the centre of Southampton were a by-word for elegance and quality shopping are long gone but pictures such as these are a happy reminder.

Tyrell and Green was a large store with drapers and outfitting departments and had a fine reputation for quality, value and personal service from knowledgeable counter staff. The firm was merged with the John Lewis Group in 1934.

The building in Above Bar was demolished in 2000 and the area redeveloped as the City Arts Centre.

The image is one of the many evocative pictures in Southampton, one of a range of titles produced by Amberley Publishing in association with Historic England.
