IN JULY 1934, the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Sir Harold Pink, initiated a new service to speed the time for a telephone subscriber in the city to make a long-distance or ‘trunk’ call.

This is one of the 150 illustrations in Portsmouth at Work People and Industries Through the Years, which explores the range of places where skills have been employed and wages have been earned throughout the centuries.

Written by Philip MacDougall and published by Amberley, the book has a strong emphasis on the city’s relationship with the Royal Navy and other maritime-related services but it also covers how the needs of residents and visitors were met and national businesses established such as Chubb and retailer Timothy White.
