PUPILS were told the bear necessities last week when the star of Paddington gave a talk in a primary school near Petersfield.
Hugh Bonneville talked to Rogate youngsters last Friday morning about the film industry and life with Peru’s most famous bear.
The actor, who plays Henry Brown in the popular films, also enthused about his career and encouraged pupils to follow the example set by his on-screen Paddington family towards strangers.
“He (Henry) wanted to hand him over to the authorities,” said the Downton Abbey star.
“But he soon realised that Paddington made a huge difference to his life and the life of his family and that’s well worth thinking about when you meet strangers. Always be cautious, but don’t be scared of holding out a hand.”
Youngsters got the chance to ask plenty of questions before Hugh gave a fascinating talk about how Paddington was filmed, showing numerous pictures from behind the scenes.
He also revealed his memory techniques and how he opted for a career in acting instead of law.
“I’m still waiting for the tap on the shoulder and for someone to say ‘you’ve had your fun, now go and do a proper job,” added Hugh.
“I love what I do and it happens I’ve been in some very successful things, but my favourite thing is being another character and sharing stories with an audience.”
He added: “Fame is a silly thing and it’s not real but the best thing is telling stories.”
Headteacher Amy O’Toole thanked Mr Bonneville for the talk and every pupil was given a Paddington ‘gift bag’ containing a book, activity set and badge.
