THE MILLENNIUM Path around Petersfield Heath is to be widened so that it can be better enjoyed.

Petersfield Town Council manages the 94-acre beauty spot, and members have agreed to spend around £32,000 widening and resurfacing the path.

The walkway, turning right out of the Sussex Road car park, runs round to the Plump Duck café, and is considered too narrow and has become uneven and eroded.

Petersfield Mayor Lesley Farrow said: “It is planned to widen and resurface it to make it more user friendly, so people can walk side by side, or beside pushchairs and wheelchairs.

“It’s a beautiful walk that should be enjoyed by as many people as possible.”

It is hoped the work to double the width of the path will begin soon.

There are also plans to widen and replace the single-file wooden boardwalk on the south side of the pond, again to make it more user friendly.

Cllr Paul Strawbridge said: “There is a management plan for the Heath, and part of that is improving the wooden boardwalk.

“Current thinking is to replace it with something wider made of something more durable. We also hope to create more reed areas for the wildlife.”

Churcher’s College students also hope to extend a path they laid between the car park and boardwalk.
