TWO PETERSFIELD artists will be taking part in an innovative Hallowe’en-themed event in Chichester.

Fiona Harvey and Aldobranti Fosco-Fornio, both from Russell Way in Petersfield, have had work selected by Yinka Shonibare for the 24-hour Inventive Factory event at The Novium Museum in Chichester, as part of the Museums at Night series.

The artists are both doing performance pieces on Friday evening in the museum.

Yinka Shonibare is a London-based artist of Nigerian descent, whose work has appeared on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, among many other places. His hallmark is the use of African-inspired fabrics in unexpected places in order to make a comment.

He has invited Aldobranti and Fiona to bring their work along this Friday.

Fiona worked as a scientist for many years before changing focus to become a photographic artist.

Her performance piece is titled Resting Places.

She said: “My interest is in death and funerary practices, through performance art and photography. I am using the lift as a burial chamber and time travelling device, to reflect local funerary practices of different periods. Three funerals will take place from the Neolithic period, the Roman era and Saxon period. Visitors entering the lift are invited to select grave goods to add to the burial and the performance will be filmed.

“This performance connects us with the past by sharing and taking part in customs concerning the disposal of the body after death and the process of saying goodbye to someone.”

Aldobranti gained a MA in fine art from University of Southampton in 2014. In previous lives he has been a working mathematician, a chartered engineer, a marketing director and a unicyclist.

He said: “The work at Novium is a durational performance piece. I am marking out during the course of the night a trail of powdered chalk underfoot — it echoes the white tracks carved into the chalk of the South Downs by the passage of feet over thousands of years.”

The Novium is in Tower Street, Chichester. Call 01243 775888 or e-mail [email protected] for tickets to the 24-hour Inventive Factory.
