MORE than 250 Petersfield residents campaigning for road safety improvements have backed a questioning letter sent to Hampshire County Council.

The campaigners have all signed a petition asking why safety improvements to Winchester Road from the A3 slip road to the Bell Hill roundabout recommended in 2013 haven’t been done.

These include a footpath from Stoneham Park to the roundabout, and a pedestrian crossing, or refuge point, at the bottom of Bell Hill.

They also claim that pedestrian road crossings suggested for elsewhere in Petersfield haven’t been installed either.

The letter also asks when safe walking routes into town from Beckham Lane, Stoneham Park and Stoneham Close will be put in place.

It says: “Has the council audited safe walking routes to schools. When a safe walking route isn’t possible the council should provide transport to school for children.”

The campaigners say that four years ago it was recommended that the projects should be delivered in 10 years.

The letter asks: “Can you demonstrate some serious consideration now on how this will be delivered.”

East Hampshire District Council has also received a copy of the letter from the We Want a Safe Crossing for Winchester Road campaign group, which ends “we cannot wait (for safety works) until there is a significant accident, or pedestrian fatality, on this road.”
