A PETERSFIELD social enterprise company is playing a part in reducing unemployment locally, according to Petersfield Job Centre.

Building Steps, also a registered charity, was started in April and the first course for trainees began in August.

It was formed by a mix of businessmen, building professionals and finance experts, living in and around Petersfield and is based in the town. It aims to provide experience in building and renovation work.

A spokesman said: “Our aim is to help those who have experienced difficulty in getting a job, through ill health, family circumstance, inability to work full time, or for any other reason.”

Praise for the company comes as unemployment in Petersfield continues to fall, according to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions.

A spokesman for Petersfield Job?Centre in Chapel Street said: “There are 127 people in Petersfield claiming Job Seekers Allowance (unemployment benefit), which is the lowest it’s been for some time.

“I think there are more jobs around, especially full time jobs.

“And we are working closely with those who have lost their jobs to help them transfer their skills.

“For example someone who worked in a warehouse may have skills that are transferable, that can be used elsewhere.

“We are also working with Building Steps, who help people get jobs in the building industry.”

In Petersfield, a total of 127 people are claiming Job?Seekers Allowance, of which 36 are 18 to 24-year-olds.

The spokesman said: “This is the lowest it’s been for a while.”

And the fall in unemployment is mirrored across East?Hampshire, she added.

“There are now 367 people claiming Job Seekers Allowance, of whom 80 are between 18 to 24-years-old.

“Nationally, unemployment stands at 1,800,000, the lowest figure since 2008, which equates to an 11 per cent year-on-year decrease in unemployment.

“This is reflected in Petersfield and the wider area of East Hampshire.”
