A PETERSFIELD charity preparing for a fundraising walk for Syrian refugee families living locally says it is now more important than ever to do as much as possible to help those fleeing the devastated country.
The plea by the Rural Refugee Network (RRN) comes after legislation came into effect closing American borders to refugees, immigrants and students from mainly Muslim countries like Syria.
RRN helps rehome Syrian refugees here, and is also helping child refugees who have lost their parents. To raise money for them, and protest the border closure and show solidarity with other refugees, sympathisers are invited to join the Walk for Hope.
RNN spokeswoman Kay Summerfield said: “It will raise money for Syrian families in our local area, and it’s now more important than ever to show support for Syrian refugees across the world who have been forced to flee their homes, and make it clear we are not turning our backs on them.”
Walkers are asked to meet at 10am at Elsted village hall to take part in the three kilometer circular walk, which sets off at 10.30am
Kay said: “After there will be tea and cake in the hall, and a Syrian refugee will be giving a talk.”
A family ticket to take part in the walk and enjoy the tea and talk is £10, single walkers and couples are welcome and asked to make a donation. There is also a Just Giving webpage called RRN_Walk for Hope; walk details are also on the Rural Refugee Network face book page.
