THANKS to the generosity of a university, a Petersfield father who missed his son’s graduation, now has photographs of the once in a lifetime celebration.

David Podger, of Monks Orchard, was due to fly from Southampton to Leeds for the graduation of his son Tommy at Leeds Trinity University, on July 20.

But Eastern Airlines said David (58) and another passenger couldn’t board the plane because it would then be overweight.

David, who had a pre- booked ticket, was left distraught and upset after being turned away by the airline.

Tommy said: “I was very disappointed dad wasn’t able to attend and I would like to thank Leeds Trinity for all they have done so we were able to celebrate the occasion as a family.”

After hearing of David’s plight, the university arranged for a photographer to take pictures of the father and son together on Petersfield Heath.

David added: “The generosity of the university has helped to make up for the frustration I felt on the day.”

University spokesman Tim Leadbeater said: “Graduation is a celebration, and wanted to offer Tommy, David and their family the opportunity to it together.”
