A PETERSFIELD man completed a 25km hill walk in “atrocious” weather to raise money for a cancer awareness pamphlet.

Phil Coverdale (64), of Pulens Lane, finished the challenging sponsored walk in the Peak District in six hours and 14 minutes, coming 95th out of 284 walkers.

The former business manager at The Petersfield School said: “The weather was atrocious, by lunchtime rain was hammering down.

“Because of the bad weather, quite a few didn’t finish, which was a shame.”

Phil hopes to raise enough to publish an awareness pamphlet about a form of gastric cancer. So far his walk sponsorship total is £2,500, but he is continuing to collect donations.

He was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer by chance during a check up at the Swan Surgery in Petersfield.

He said: “Fortunately the symptoms were recognised in time and I was treated.”

This included undergoing chemotherapy and having a kidney removed.

Now he wants to raise awareness of the condition and its symptoms.

He said: “Anyone who regularly suffers heartburn or indigestion is advised to see their doctor.”
