A PETERSFIELD woman who wants traffic speed on a road through town better regulated before a ‘devastating event’ takes place, has taken the matter to East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds.

The mother, her five month old son and husband live near the new Foxfield Grove estate off The Causeway, and she says that the road is fast becoming unable to cope with the amount, and speed, of traffic using it

She said: “My husband and I often see cars passing our house at excessive speeds, often overtaking and racing along a heavily populated and well used stretch of road used by walkers and cyclists and young families.

"On more than one occasion I have seen cars racing around the roundabout at the new Foxfield estate, in a sideways ‘drifting’ style -- and even using the wrong side of the road to get past cars travelling at the legal speed.

"I feel at danger any time I walk up and down The Causeway with my son, which is a daily event and I cannot fathom how with The Petersfield School halfway up the causeway there is absolutely no deterrent to the maniac drivers that use this stretch of road.

"There is no traffic calming whatsoever – no speed cameras, no bumps and not even lollipop ladies operating at school times.

"In the area of the Causeway we live at, there was even the recent removal of the 30 mph road markings and this in itself makes no sense when it is indeed a 30 mph limit.

“Factoring in the access roads of new developments along the Causeway the volume of traffic can only increase, along with the associated risk.”

East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds has referred her concerns to Hampshire County Council, who are responsible for road speed management.

Mr Hinds said: “Road safety is an important issue and it is good to know that there are residents, such as yourself, who will take action to highlight dangers which they see developing. It is not, however, an area in which I have any role or decision-making powers.

“It falls within Hampshire County Council’s area of operation. “

Local county councillor Ken Moon said he that he knew historically residents felt there was been issues with congestion and speed on the road. He said residents could contact him and he would look into their concerns.
