IT’S THE tale of two Petersfield Probus clubs – one that admits women and one that doesn’t.
The Petersfield and District Probus Club has been an all-male bastion since its formation almost four decades ago, and has no intention of changing.
Meanwhile, the Petersfield South Downs Probus Club, which opened the doors to women several years ago, is on the verge of appointing its first female chairman.
Jan Parry, currently acting chairman, takes the helm officially at the annual general meeting on February 23, and this new “gender-neutral” era is thought to be crucial if the traditional dining and social club is not to “wither on the vine”.
Jan has had a prestigious career in library and information services, for Government departments, and for the enquiry into the Hillsborough disaster.
She said:?“Being chair will show acceptance from the membership and will allow me to show what women can bring to the mix, get more publicity hopefully and bring in more female members.”
When he was the club chairman David Griffiths vowed to reverse the increasing average age of the members as it was nearing 80, and to make the club more representative of today’s society. Admitting women seemed to be the answer. The committee was in favour, but the move was only narrowly supported when put out to members of the club set up 21 years ago. Eight men resigned over the issue, but five women joined.
“Have the ladies integrated well, and have the earlier off-stage disaffected murmurings from some of the chaps disappeared? Well, the answer to both questions is ‘yes’,” said David. “The ladies have brought a fresh dimension to the character and personality of the club.”
Probus clubs, which have a worldwide network, offer fellowship to retired or semi-retired professional and business people, and put on an active programme of lunches, walks, outings and activities. Many clubs around the UK are restricted to men, but some have, since the introduction of the Equality Act 2010, become mixed. Not so the Petersfield and District Probus.
Brian Mayo, of the club, said:?“Our Probus club has been all male since its inception 38 years ago, and there has been no desire on the part of the membership to change that.” The spouses of club members and widows of former members were encouraged to take part in social activities though.
Both clubs, which meet at The Half Moon, Sheet, welcome new members. Contact Brian Mayo on 01730 894866. Visit www.petersfieldsdprobusclub.co.uk
