THERE were beers, cheers and tears of joy in the pubs of Petersfield on Saturday as crowds gathered to watch a once in a generation event.

Chants of ‘It’s coming home’ were heard throughout the town after England secured their place in the semi finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

Their 2-0 win over Sweden in the last eight was heartily celebrated by the many who gathered in town centre pubs.

“It was super busy,” said Hatty West, bar worker at The Folly, where the historic game was watched by around 70 people.

“There was a really lovely atmosphere the whole time and especially after it was obvious we were going to win, not like the Colombia game where it was quite tense.”

Similar crowds are expected in the town’s pubs this evening (Wednesday) when the Three Lions take on Croatia for a place in the final.
