CONCERNS have been raised about the speed vehicles are travelling along a residential road in Petersfield.

Residents who live near the junction of Beckham Lane and Winchester Road regularly witness cars travelling at high speed instead of sticking to the 30mph speed limit.

Recently, signage and barriers have been damaged – indicating an accident.

One resident, who wanted to stay anonymous, lives in nearby Stoneham Park. He said: “It’s about the speed of traffic going along the A272. It’s frightening.

“There’s a 30mph sign off the bypass but I think a lot of people don’t see it.

“It’s very difficult to get out of Stoneham Park. Sometimes you are waiting for a long time to cross the road.”

Town councillor and mayor Jamie Matthews, who lives near the road, said: “I walk across the road on a daily basis and also have an 18-month-old child.

“There are no suitable crossing points, with dropped kerbs or pedestrian refuges, yet there are significant amounts of pedestrians crossing this road.”

Cllr Matthews added that a traffic survey on Winchester Road indicated that over a week 75 per cent of all traffic exceeded the speed limit while using this route.

“The road is busy during the day time and, like most of Petersfield, is much quieter in the evening. The recent accident happened in the middle of the night and caused significant damage.

“As there is no safe crossing point, most people have to wait in the roadway at the end of Beckham Lane before crossing Winchester Road.

“This is the exact spot where the accident occurred, which, should it have taken place during the daytime, could well have resulted in injuries to pedestrians waiting to cross the road.”

Executive member for environment and transport at Hampshire County Council Councillor Rob Humby said: “I can confirm the speed limit on Winchester Road past Beckham Lane is 30mph and also, having had the safety record checked for the past five years, there have been no recorded accidents which the police have attributed to speed.

“We undertake regular analysis of all injury accidents that occur on our road network and we will take the appropriate action if we identify any issues.”
