A PAIR of shopkeepers have confirmed that Petersfield residents can spin a good yarn after concluding a sewing competition.

Sally-Ann Cole (pictured holding the trophy) was buzzing after being named Petersfield Sewing Bee 2018 winner by Steven and Jo Watts, of Sew Creative.

She was presented with the trophy by celebrity sewer Wendy Gardiner, out of more than 60 people who entered this year’s competition at the Lavant Street business.

The event had a First World War theme with adult entrants being challenged to make an item out of poppy-decorated fabric. Entrants were also given a yard of linen, which was very scarce during the First World War, to embroider and were challenged to remodel an item.

Some of the results were incredibly inventive with Matt Ralph, a partially-sighted sewer, being presented with the Spirit of the Sewing Bee trophy for producing a war-themed wall hanging.

Mr Watts said: “It looked amazing and it actually looked like it had been in the war. He really did go the extra mile.”

One entrant covered a teddy bear in former baby sleeping suits while another turned a shrunk jumper into a cushion.

But Sally-Ann definitely caught the eye as she turned a gentleman’s tweed jacket into a pair of floppy hats and a bag.
