STUDENTS from The Petersfield School met British astronaut Tim Peake after winning the opportunity in a science and space related competition.

The four pupils, Thomas Lowe, Sam Tetlow, Rebecca Crowe and Finn Cawkell, and members of the school’s out of hours, Science, Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) club; club members plan and complete projects relating to the four topics.

They were among 500 pupils from across the South of England who met the astronaut at the University of Portsmouth.

To be selected, they won a competition which involved giving a presentation to experts from the UK Space Agency, European Space Agency (ESA) and partner organisations.

Tim Peake, who went to the university, spoke about his six-month mission to the international space station.

Nothing compared, he said, to the majesty and beauty of planet Earth seen from the space station.

It was his first appearance at a UK Space Agency Schools Conference, and every pupil at the conference had the chance to meet and have their photo taken with him and talk about their own experiments inspired by mission.

A spokesman for The Petersfield School (TPS) said: “The four from TPS, asked lots of questions and participated in as many events as they could. The highlight of the day was meeting and being photographed with Tim Peake himself.”
