MPs FOR East Hampshire and the Meon Valley have announced who they will be supporting in the forthcoming campaign to elect a new Prime Minister. After the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU), Prime Minister David Cameron said he would step down once a replacement was elected, which looks likely to be by September. Now Conservative MPs face the task of beginning to elect his successor. The initial five candidates will be voted on by MPs until two are left from whom party members will choose.Among those standing is Home Secretary Theresa May. East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds said: “As we embark on negotiating a new relationship with our nearest neighbours and biggest trading partners, we need strong leadership, attention to detail and a resolute approach. “I believe Theresa May is the best placed candidate to secure the best future outcome for our country. “Leaving the EU brings opportunities but it also carries risks; the task now is to maximise the former and minimise the latter. Mrs May has proven repeatedly her ability to work cooperatively but negotiate determinedly.” Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery said Mrs May (59) was a “fantastic leader” able “to make tough decisions for the good of the country.” He added: “She had a superb eye for detail “There is no doubt in my mind she is the most credible and experienced politician who can quickly unify the party and take the country forward as Prime Minster during the challenging months ahead. “We need an experienced captain right now with gravitas and with all the skills to offer the best leadership when we sit down and negotiate with our European friends on the details of our leaving the EU. “I believe Theresa has all those skills.”
