AN ADAPTATION of British television favourite The Darling Buds of May, which brought Catherine Zeta-Jones to fame, is the spring choice of Petersfield’s Winton Players.
Pop and Ma Larkin live in rural bliss with their six children. The family make their living from a variety of ‘projects’ including selling their discarded possessions and picking strawberries.
The profits are modest, however, Pop’s aversion to paying income tax allows them to joyfully spend their money on luxury items and holidays abroad.
However their idyllic bubble is shattered when the earnest Mr Charlton, a young tax official, turns up to investigate the family.
Sitting in the director’s chair is Winton Players regular Penny Young, fresh off the success of Snow White in January 2017.
Returning to the stage as male lead Pop Larkin, following his debut last October as Smith in ‘Murder on the Nile’, is Simon Stanley. Newcomer to Winton Players – although a regular with Petersfield Theatre Group – Sarah Dove joins Stanley as Ma Larkin and Sarah Melville who will be playing Mariette.
The Darling Buds of May will run at Petersfield Festival Hall from April 12-15. Tickets are on public sale on the website at: www.wintonplayers.org.uk or at the Tourist Information Centre at Petersfield Library.
