A DEVELOPER believes proposals for Petersfield’s former Job Centre will “enhance the vitality and viability” of the town centre.

Plans to divide the ground floor of the empty Chapel Street premises into a pair of retail units have been lodged with the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA).

New shopfront windows will be installed into the passageway wall at the side of the building if plans by Charles Marks Holdings Limited are approved.

The firm also wants to improve and convert the one-storey building behind the former Job Centre into a one-bedroom apartment to complement the residential development behind The Old Drum.

“Petersfield has witnessed several new residential infill developments behind the commercial frontage areas and small pedestrian lanes,” reads the firm’s design and access statement.

“These have improved the character of the area and this application seeks to achieve similar objectives.

“The proposed development of the site will improve both the function and appearance of the building.”

The SDNPA has approved plans to convert the first and second floors above into six apartments. For details and to comment type 03700 after following the link at: www.southdowns.gov.uk/planning
