A CONCERT which will celebrate one of East Hampshire’s favourite sons through the mediums of spoken word and music will take place in Alton later this month.
Fans of the acclaimed First World War poet, Edward Thomas, should circle Saturday, November 18, on their calendar as a concert featuring the Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia will take place at the Maltings Centre.
The ‘Out of the Wood of Thoughts’ concert, conducted by Christopher Burgess, will feature nine of his poems, with each being narrated by Geraldene Hayles to incidental music by Steve Marshall.
The programme has been billed as “An Autumn Miscellany” of memorable music with highlights including Bartok’s Romanian Dances, the Christmas Concerto by Corelli, Elgar’s Nimrod and the Gopak by Mussorgsky as well as other pieces.
Few Post readers will need reminding of the poet’s connection to East Hampshire and Petersfield as Thomas lived in Steep before dying in the Battle of Arras in 1917, just a few days after the 39-year-old arrived in France.
The concert will begin at 7pm while tickets are £10 on the door or from Waterstone’s Alton shop. Entry is £5 for students.
Free tickets for recorder teachers, plus one pupil, are available. For more information about the offer e-mail: [email protected]
