POLICE say traffic is moving again after the major incident on the A31 last night but are warning motorists across Hampshire not to travel and unless their journey is essential.
The incident on the A31 between Southampton and Ringwood involved numerous vehicles and incidents and closed the road.
As snow and winds blanketed the road causing problems the police called in the army to help move vehicles and clear the road.
The A31 chaos caused traffic issues on roads for miles around, but early this morning the road was declared open, although clear up work is continuing.
A police spokesman said: “The A31 is moving again now but we would urge drivers to avoid that area while we seek to clear the trapped traffic and recover abandoned vehicles.
“An amber weather warning for snow, freezing rain and high winds is still in place across Hampshire so once again, we advise against all non-essential travel.”
Locally Hampshire County Council gritting lorries and snow ploughs worked through the night to clear main roads, but due to work pressure many lanes and residential side roads remain snow and ice covered.
