POLICE will carry out high visibility patrols at Petersfield station to deter bike thieves and reinforce safety messages about locking bikes securely.
The station has cycle racks where bikes can be locked up and left, but bikes have been stolen from there, say British Transport Police (BTP).
A police spokesman said: “Sadly due to being left for long periods of time and not being adequately secured, they can be vulnerable to theft.
“Officers will be stepping up patrols to deter bike thieves and advise passengers on how to securely lock their bikes at stations.”
As well as the patrols, BTP recently launched a new campaign with Bike Register called Lock It Mark It.
It aims to educate passengers about the importance of securely locking bikes, as thieves are put of stealing bikes that are adequately locked and security marked.
BTP Inspector Adam McEvoy said: “There has been a steady rise in passengers leaving cycles at railway stations.
“Unfortunately this has provided increased opportunities for thieves, due to cycles being relatively easy to steal and dispose of.
“Our message is simple – make sure you lock and mark your bike to reduce the chances of it being stolen.”
Police are offering tips on deterring thieves, including locking the bike frame and both wheels tightly to a cycle stand as close to the stand as possible, and preferably in sight of security cameras.
Bikes should also be security marked and registered on the www.Bikeregister.com.website; BTP regularly hold free marking events at stations, for details follow Twitter @BTP.
They also advise bike’s details should be recorded, including the frame number and other features and a photo taken of it; the details could be crucial in identifying and recovering a stolen bike.
A BTP spokesman added: “Having your Bike Register number, a photo and any other details to hand may help us with our investigation.”
As well as at Petersfield, officers will be carrying out patrols at Chichester, Havant, Fratton, Basingstoke, Fleet, Farnborough and Southampton Central rail stations.
