WINTON Players mark the centenary of the end of the First World War with their autumn production of Birdsong.

The play is adapted from the best-selling novel by Sebastian Faulks, which follows the story of young army officer, Lieutenant Stephen Wraysford.

As a young man before the war, Wraysford was caught up in an all-consuming love affair in Amiens, France. As the war unfolds, Stephen finds himself closer to Amiens as he continues his quest to understand how far mankind can go and still call themselves human.

Directing this powerful and compelling story of love and courage is long-serving Winton Player Roger Wettone, who has been passionate about the play.

In the role of Stephen Wraysford is Mark Spiller, a relative newcomer to Winton Players, playing opposite leading lady – and returning Winton Player – Joanne Stephenson takes on the role of Isabelle Azaire, Wraysford’s love interest. The whole play boasts some 20-plus Winton Players.

Birdsong will be performed at the Petersfield Festival Hall from October 11-13 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from Petersfield Library or at: www.wintonplayers.org.uk
