ENTRIES in the Petersfield In Bloom 2017 competition have been praised for being of a “high standard.”

This year saw 50 householders, businesses, schools, care homes and public service buildings enter the annual competition run by Petersfield Town Council (PTC).

PTC spokesman Steve Field said: “The judges were pleased with the high standards maintained in and around the town.

“Once again, Petersfield residents and businesses worked hard to make the town a beautiful place to live and visit in the summer months.

“The council would like to thank all who have made the effort.

“As is often said, it is not about winning, but about participating, and we are grateful to all those who once again made the competition a successful event.”

Judging took place on a sunny and warm day, with four groups of judges and helpers covering the 12 categories in this year’s competition.

The judges were from Empshott and Hawkley Horticultural Society, led by society chairman Maggie Johnson, and from Liss Horticultural Society, accompanied by society secretary Sue Jordan.

Also helping judge the entries on July 13, was Petersfield In Bloom’s president and television gardening expert Pippa Greenwood, who lives in the area.

They were welcomed to their task and introduced to the 50 entries received in the council chamber of the Town Hall by Petersfield mayor Cllr Jamie Matthews and his consort, Melissa Matthews.

Also there were Petersfield councillors, who helped guide the judges around the town as they viewed, photographed, assessed, and made highly commended, bronze, silver and gold awards in each category.

The prizegiving will be on Thursday, October 5, in the Rose Room, when Ms Greenwood will present the certificates and trophies.

This year’s recipient of Petersfield In Bloom’s Jenny Turner Prize, which recognises a special effort, will also be announced during the evening.

Participants, judges and members of the public are welcome to attend the free entry awards evening.

Refreshments will be available.
