MEMBERS of the public have been urged to be vigilante after the latest fire on Petersfield Heath which spread quickly on Monday afternoon.

Alert passers-by called firefighters and directed traffic after a blaze flared up across the tinder-dry undergrowth on Heath Road East near its junction with Rival Moor Road.

Petersfield Town Council owns and maintains the popular beauty spot which has attracted many visitors during this year’s warm weather. Office and committees manager Steve Field has appealed to users to be careful.

“We don’t know how the latest fire occurred but we’re asking people to take precautions and ensure cigarette ends are put out properly.

“Although barbecues are banned on the Heath all year round, we know it happens. People are either ignoring the ban or not paying attention.

“The particular environment of the Heath means it can catch light easily and fire can travel beneath the surface.

“We want to make the public aware of the risks,” added Mr Field, who thanked the people who reported the incident and the quick reaction of firefighters.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire, reported at 2.50pm, was attended by vehicles from Bordon, Liphook and Fleet, with about one hectare of grass land affected.

Two jets, a hose reel and a beater were used and about ten firefighters in total were at the incident, which was dealt with in about one and a half hours.
